I get what you’re saying, and it’s pretty similar here in the Czech Republic too. We still have a lot of these gender expectations, though things are slowly shifting, especially among younger people. More girls are studying tech subjects now, and guys are starting to look at careers in areas like education. But there’s definitely still this pressure, especially from older generations, about what’s considered ‘normal’ work for men and women. I think Western Europe might be ahead in this, but we’re catching up, one step at a time.

This is such an interesting topic. I’ve been thinking a lot about how gender expectations affect our mental health and especially identity. I even added a piece to the Repository here about identity crisis and gender equality—definitely inspired by my admiration for psychologists Erikson and Marcia. Their ideas on identity development feel super relevant today, especially with all the shifting norms around gender.

For me, gender expectations can feel like both a burden and a door opening to something new. It’s liberating to redefine ourselves, but also a bit overwhelming without the clear paths that used to be there.

I’d love to hear from others—how are you all navigating this? Does redefining gender roles feel freeing or confusing for you?

Feel free to check out my reflection in the Repository if you’re curious.

What do you guys think about how regional or cultural environments condition gender inequality? I can’t help but notice the stark differences in gender equality between places like Turkey and Germany. It feels like cultural norms really shape people’s ideas of what gender roles should be, and it’s surprising how much these expectations can vary even within Europe. Would love to hear your experiences or thoughts on how different cultures influence gender equality in everyday life.
